Da Hui started in 1976 when some Hawaiian locals got fed up with tourists from the mainland and Australia who took over the waves and treated them like dirt. They showed up at a surf contest and started shredding waves like they owned the ocean, and the guy running the contest had no idea who they were.
I saw Da Hui at the contest and they were surfing like they were born on the waves.
Fred Hemmings was so mad he tried to stop them, but Da Hui just laughed at him.
They weren’t there to win, they were there to teach the tourists a lesson.
